2023 Paint Colours of the Year

Updated: Apr 23, 2023

In our last blog entry, we touched on some of the top home design trends of 2023. With a shift towards bold colours and prints or soft warm neutrals, we're here to help you navigate the top colour trends of the year and how you can incorporate your favourites into your own home for a quick and instant room makeover.

1. Darkroom - Sherwin-Williams The boldest shade in the HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams' collection, Darkroom has earned the title of their Colour of the Year. This rich black with eggplant undertones is undoubtedly romantic, moody and elegant.

How You Can Use It

The purple notes in this black paint means it adds drama to almost any space in a soft, inviting way. In a living room, it elevates the design while maintaining a cozy and relaxed feel. Another plus: Since it’s a neutral, it accents the other shades in the collection effortlessly and can be used indoors and out. 2023 Design trend Perfect for dipping your toes into the popular Gothic Glam design trend. via HGTV

2. Blank Canvas - Behr Behr's selection for 2023, Blank Canvas, is all about fresh starts and sanctuary-like spaces. A serene, rich, complex white with creamy undertones.

Beautifully layered with other neutrals or natural textures, such as wicker or stone, or with off-blacks for a newer version of black and white. 2023 Design trend A great backdrop for the natural and soothing minimalist warm and bright design trend. via Style at Home

3. Raspberry Blush - Benjamin Moore The boldest Colour of the Year selection for 2023 is Benjamin Moore's Raspberry Blush. This lively red-orange is full of personality and aims to inspire dramatic transformations around the home.

How You Can Use It

Go all-in and try this blazing hue on the walls of a living room for a look that's all together bright, warm and homey. Not ready to douse your walls with red? Use this paint to give an old piece of furniture a striking new look, or put paint to paper (or canvas) and create an eye-catching piece of DIY art to jazz up a bare wall. 2023 Design trend If you're embracing the Maximalist trend, this colour is for you! via HGTV

4. Redend Point - Sherwin-Williams A derivative of the terracotta trend that has been part of the design landscape for the past few years, pinky-beige is the new neutral on the scene for 2023. Redend Point by Sherwin-Williams encapsulates this soulful, earthy hue. How you can use it A deliciously warm, milk-chocolatey tan, Redend Point is a soothing and calming neutral that would instantly warm up a bedroom and serve as a perfect backdrop to a plush bed piled with textured linens and pillows.

5. Everglade Deck - Valspar Everglade Deck is all about restoration. This deep teal will liven up plain walls while elevating the surrounding design.

How You Can Use It

Painting this sea green on a piece of furniture, like a dresser or a console, would provide a pretty pop in an otherwise neutral room. But the color is sophisticated enough to cover every wall (and even the ceiling!) without feeling overpowering — it's saturated and soothing all at once. Pair it with warm neutrals like beige or cream for an instant relaxing and cozy vibe. 2023 Design trend Bold enough to fit the Maximalist style and dramatic enough for Gothic Glam elegance.
